Hot Tire Pickup and Why Shop Floors Peel in Wheel Tracks

Hot tire pickup is one of the most recognizable coating failures in the trade. A vehicle comes in off the highway with tires near 150 degrees, parks, and the tire plasticizers soften the coating underneath. When the car pulls out, the coating comes with it.

It is entirely preventable, and the fix is specification rather than maintenance.

Why consumer-grade coatings fail this test

Big-box epoxy kits and thin roll-on products have low heat tolerance and poor adhesion. Combine those with a slab that was acid-etched rather than ground, and hot tire pickup is not a risk — it is a schedule.

What actually stops it

Three things together: a mechanically ground profile so the system is keyed into the concrete, a high-strength polyurea base, and a polyaspartic topcoat with genuine heat resistance.

Polyaspartic chemistry does not soften at tire temperatures and does not chemically react with tire plasticizers. That combination is what makes the failure stop.

The rest of what a shop floor needs

While you are specifying for heat, specify for everything else the bay sees.

  • Resistance to motor oil, brake fluid, coolant and solvents
  • Slip texture that still works when the floor is wet
  • A gloss level that brightens the bay without creating glare
  • Striping for bays, walkways and equipment zones
  • Fast cure so bays come back online overnight

Fixing a floor that already failed

A peeled floor cannot be patched over. The remaining coating has to come off mechanically, the slab has to be re-profiled and decontaminated, and the correct system installed from the substrate up.

It is more work than getting it right the first time, but it is a one-time cost — not a recurring one.
